FOR DOCTORS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS
For doctors and psychologists
Courses and advice for psychologists
We offer courses and advice to psychologists who work with children and young people with high or exceptional learning potential. Behaviour and responses in this group may sometimes overlap with symptoms of ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, anxiety or school refusal. Knowledge of how high learning potential can present is therefore important for sound differential diagnostic assessments and to avoid misinterpretation.
We can also contribute to professional discussions of individual cases in anonymised form, with particular emphasis on differential diagnosis and on pedagogical measures and adjustments that could be recommended to the school.
Advice for doctors
We offer advice to general practitioners who meet children and young people with recurring physical symptoms, school absence or reduced overall functioning where the school situation may be a contributing factor. For pupils with high or exceptional learning potential, a lack of academic challenge, a low sense of achievement or insufficiently adapted teaching may contribute to stress-related symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, sleep difficulties and exhaustion.
This advice does not replace medical assessment, but can contribute to a broader basis for assessment and to collaboration with parents or guardians, the school and, where relevant, the educational psychology service (PPT). The aim is to identify whether educational adjustments may form part of the response, alongside necessary medical and mental-health follow-up.
